Carlow town councillors are seeking assurances from the HSE over concerns that rehabilitation facilities at the Sacred Heart Hospital had been withdrawn from Carlow people.

Some €5 million is being spent this year on the upgrading of facilities at Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar. The investment has been welcomed by local Fianna Fáil election candidate Michael Feeney.

Many elderly people walk to the Sacred Heart visiting friends or receiving treatments.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has received assurances from the HSE that specialist mental health services in Castlebar will be adequately met with supports in place to meet the social needs of those concerned. This follows the closure of the Psychiatric Day Centre which operated for many years at the Sacred Heart Hospital. The service provided there was specialist and of great personal importance to those who attended.
